Upper Deck released a statement yesterday about losing the World of Warcraft license from Blizzard Entertainment.
In it, they faulted the economy and declining sales for why they were giving up the product.
"After long and careful deliberation, Upper Deck International (UDI) will not be renewing its World of Warcraft license agreements with Blizzard Entertainment. We’ve had a fantastic time working on the World of Warcraft brand and feel we have produced some of the most compelling TCG and Miniatures Game products since the turn of the century. Unfortunately, due to gradually declining sales over the past few years and the overall downturn in the economic climate, we have had to make the tough decision to discontinue our World of Warcraft product lines."
TheStarkingtonPost.com has not confirmed whether these claims are true. However, 2010 marked the largest year ever for Magic: The Gathering, and Wizards of the Coast, makers of the game, as well as its parent company Hasbro both had banner years. Whatever the reason Upper Deck is relinquishing the license, Blizzard has repeatedly ensured fans of the game they would be stepping in to make sure it remains in production.
