Only weeks after announcing the largest privately run cash tournament circuit for Magic: The Gathering, TCGPlayer.com Wednesday announced a qualifier series for the events as well. How do they work? Following in the footsteps of the StarCityGames.com Open Series, the TCGPlayer events will reward finishers with TCGPlayer.com points. Score 20 points and you qualify for the $75,000 TCGPlayer.com Championship Tournament. At 40 or more points you earn a first round bye at the event, 60 points get you a second bye, and 80 points gets you a third bye.
The Qualifier circuit, run by local tournament organizers, will reward players with additional means of earning points outside the $10,000 events being held nationwide at Comic Con events. A 1st place finish at those events nets you 20 TCGPlayer.com points, 2nd nets 10, 3-4th 5, 5-8th 3, and all other finishes net 1 point. In addition, TCGPlayer.com encourages (but is not providing) the following prizes: $300 to 1st for travel expenses to the Championship and at least 2 boosters per participant. The format for the Qualifiers is Standard and the fee to enter is $25.
The full schedule of events and details for the Qualifiers can be found on TCGPlayer.com's site here.
