On the heels of heated discussion regarding the loss of two Regionals tournaments in California last week (read Chris McNutt's article on National Qualifiers here, the response to it on our Facebook page here, and our interview with the man behind the decision at WotC Scott Larabee here), Sun Mesa Events head Glenn Godard has announced the institution of additional prizes to reward Northern California players for making the trek to their National Qualifier. The players, who may have to travel as far as eight hours, were the most negatively impacted by the change from Regionals to National Qualifiers. While the new program provides more players more chances to qualify and in general closer to their homes by putting a tournament in each state instead of spreading them across regions, California's large size actually caused players there to LOSE slots and gain distance for traveling to the event.

In a press release, both Glenn and Jody Godard laid out what they're offering to players from Northern California for participating:

-Players who bring a car full of at least three other players and who have played in a Sun Mesa event before will receive free entry and free parking.

-$10 side events for all Nor Cal players, a savings of $5 for Drafts and Win-a-Box events upon presentation of photo ID verifying their residence.

-A drawing for a free box of Rise of the Eldrazi will be accorded to all participants at the event, with an additional free box drawing for those who traveled from the Northern California region.

The move is not out of character for Godard and company, who were responsible for saving the popular State Championships when Wizards of the Coast discontinued support for them.
