Before Magic Online and Duels of the Planeswalkers for the Xbox, MicroProse created a digital version of Magic known as "Shandalar." The game was a pseudo MMO in which players unlocked powerful spells as they battled across the fictional plane of Shandalar. The game even included a few cards unique to the game itself.
While not exactly a blockbuster, Shandlar struggled with AI problems and porting Magic to the digital realm before the technology to do so had really presented itself. It did become a sentimental favorite for players active in the game during those days. From our own forums comes news that it remains a sentimental favorite to this day, and not only that but is being UPDATED to include cards from new sets. How does it work? A group of dedicated Shandalar fans physically code new cards and sets to work within the game.
The full details behind the project can be found at SlightlyMagic.net (you'll probably want to begin here).
