Creature auras have always been weak because they're fragile; cast one on your creature, have the creature blown up, and you get two-for-oned. Mammoth Umbra from Rise of the Eldrazi may change that:

At five mana it may be a little expensive. Is it just Limited material, or is Giant Growthing your attacker and protecting it from death once worth it?
