Reports began trickling in Sunday that a player had been disqualified from Grand Prix-Columbus playing for Top 8 for allegedly betting on himself. The alleged details, which have not been officially confirmed by the Wizards of the Coast coverage team nor commented on by the DCI, are as follows:

Drew Levin and Craig Wescoe were paired to play against one another in Round 16, the final round of the Swiss. A win would potentially put Levin into the Top 8. After managing to beat Wescoe, Levin is allegedly quoted as saying "I just won a 50-to-1 bet that I would make Top 8." Wescoe then allegedly called for a judge who ruled Levin had to be disqualified for betting on the outcome of a tournament.

The specific rule Levin is alleged to have run afoul of is 5.3 Wagering from the Tournament Floor Rules and reads as follows:

"5.3 Wagering

Tournament participants, tournament officials, and spectators may not wager, ante, or bet on any portion (including the outcome) of a tournament, match, or game."

Wescoe did not make the Top 8, and the final standings do no include Drew Levin's name, an indication that player WAS disqualified after being paired for the 16th round. More on the situation as information comes in here on TheStarkingtonPost.com. Perhaps the worst part of the story, if the details are verified, is that it means the alleged bettor not only is DQ'ed from a Top 8 but ALSO now loses his bet.
