Early reports from Grand Prix-Oakland discussed a powerful new Boros (red-white) decklist that could kill VERY aggressively. How? Sacrificing lands combined with landfall creatures. Petr Brozek managed to take a copy to the Top 8. Here is what he came to battle with:
4 Arid Mesa
4 Flagstones of Trokair
4 Ghost Quarter
3 Mountain
1 Plains
3 Sacred Foundry
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Goblin Guide
1 Jötun Grunt
4 Plated Geopede
4 Steppe Lynx
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
2 Magma Jet
3 Path to Exile
4 Searing Blaze
3 Shard Volley
4 Zektar Shrine Expedition
Sideboard:
3 Damping Matrix
2 Jötun Grunt
1 Oblivion Ring
3 Refraction Trap
3 Smash to Smithereens
3 Volcanic Fallout
This decklist is definitely a hot one. Sure it has the Geopede/Lynx interaction with fetch lands we all know and love from Standard. But look at Flagstones of Trokair and Shard Volley. Genius! And the deck manages to pack in all of the best hate in the format, plus Refraction Trap in the sideboard. Using that card against a Flamebreak, Firespout, or Pyroclasm? Save your team AND Bolt your opponent.
All told, the deck is pretty cheap to put together for Extended (especially if you've already gotten your sets of fetch lands for Standard play). Keep an eye out for this one if you're still trying to PTQ for San Juan. Flagstones of Trokair have already begun the inching upwards in price that comes with a big performance at a Grand Prix.
