Last week we reported on a controversy at ChannelFireball.com that centered around featured columnist Matt Nass. In his latest article published late Tuesday, Nass responded to calls he had rules lawyered his opponent into a game loss over foil version of Hell's Thunder. Here's what he had to say about the validity of his calling the judge:
"Unless the opponent is doing something very weird, the only way I would suspect that a card was unusual is if there was a critical mass, like in this case. I didn’t and don’t think about foils vs. non-foils in general, and I suspect that most of us don’t. I am not carefully looking to get free wins out of the foil/nonfoil rule. I wasn’t slow-rolling the judge call (which would be illegal) because I didn’t get suspicious until suspicious things happened. Once I saw the third and fourth Thunders, I was concerned about cheating and had an absolute obligation to call the judge, which happened to be on the last turn of the game."
While the article was intended to be about interesting game situations, Nass spends the first portion of the piece highlighting the incident and responding publicly. It was the second of two high profile rules incidents after Drew Levin was booted from Grand Prix-Columbus after winning to make Top 8 and competing against Craig Wescoe (read Drew's tale). Since that time, Wescoe has apologized to Levin for the incident.
