According to ICv2's latest edition of Internal Correspondence, hobby game sales were up 5-10% in 2009 despite horrific economic conditions. The cause of much of that upswing? Stronger than expected sales for Magic: The Gathering.
"The growth was driven by a huge resurgence in Magic: The Gathering Sales and by board game sales up by double digit percentages. Yu-Gi-Oh! and the return of HeroClix also helped support improved sales. Non-collectible miniature sales were down a little, and RPG sales were down around 10% in 2009."
Magic had its best year on record, with sales levels that have helped make its parent company, Hasbro, a top pick for stock analysts.
