Previously the city has seen numerous similar events, including a Pro Tour won by Jon Finkel. That Top 8 was the first to feature a Pro Tour Hall of Famer, with both Jon Finkel and Nicolai Herzog each earning the honor in the same weekend. Finkel went on to win the whole thing, a remarkable comeback for one of the game's greatest players.

Malaysia is also home to former Magic Invitational winner Terry Soh, and was a guest home to Pro Tour-Honolulu Top 8er and Wizards R&D member Zac Hill.
