Huge Changes to Legacy and Extended

Wizards of the Coast announced late Thursday through their DailyMTG.com publication HUGE changes coming to the Extended and Legacy formats. In addition to changes to both format's banned and restricted lists, Extended will be changing entirely.

Extended

From the article itself:

"On July 1, 2010, the following sets will leave the Extended format: Ninth Edition, Mirrodin, Darksteel, Fifth Dawn, Champions of Kamigawa, Betrayers of Kamigawa, Saviors of Kamigawa, Ravnica: City of Guilds, Guildpact, Dissension, and Coldsnap. From that point forward, the Extended format will include approximately four years of Magic sets instead of seven."

The change guts the format, removing nearly half the sets previously allowed and changes the format dramatically into something closer to Standard Plus from its previous position of Legacy Lite. In addition, two cards have been added to the banned list: Hypergenesis and Sword of the Meek. The two cards likely threatened to become far too powerful in a format with significantly fewer answers and are apparently being pre-emptively removed. How will that effect things immediately? No doubt the world of Magic Online will be the first to show us, but it does certainly set the stage for Pro Tour-Amsterdam to be an entirely different world than the Extended we had been anticipating over the past few months.

Legacy

Legacy also was not spared potentially dramatic changes, particularly considering the upcoming Grand Prix starring the format in Columbus. Changes to its banned/restricted list:

Unbanned

-Grim Monolith

-Illusionary Mask

Banned

-Mystical Tutor

The changes potentially make MaskNaught a relevant deck again, as well as a host of possible artifact strategies. The banning of Mystical Tutor potentially crimps the style of a deck like Reanimator, but isn't quite as large a loss to the format at large as gaining two new powerful spells is.
